What age groups do you assess?
Steady Growth Psychology assess school aged children and adolescents.
How long does the assessment take?
The length of the assessment will vary based on a range of individual factors. Some children will provide lots of detail or take a long time to formulate their responses. Some children may need breaks to regulate their attention. Some children may take longer to build rapport with the assessor and commence testing.
Generally, Steady Growth Psychology allows 3 to 4 hours to complete cognitive and educational testing. This may occur across 1 or 2 testing sessions. Danielle will communicate with you on the day if she anticipates otherwise.
How are the assessment results communicated?
Assessment results are communicated through a detailed report and a feedback session with the parents and where possible, the child or adolescent. We believe that children and adolescents have the right to understand their results in a developmentally appropriate way, so that they can be actively involved in implementing strategies that will help them learn best.
A feedback session can also be arranged with your child's school for an additional fee.
Do I need to stay with my child during testing?
Parents must remain onsite for the duration of testing (unless the testing is occurring at your child's school), however, parents will not be in the room while testing is occurring, consistent with standard testing protocols.
Danielle is skilled at helping young people feel at ease throughout the assessment process. If a child is feeling nervous, Danielle will spend time getting to know them, chatting or playing a game, until they are feeling comfortable. This is important for obtaining accurate results.
How do I explain the assessment to my child?
It is recommended you give your child some information about the assessment a day or two prior, in a way that is developmentally appropriate. Some key points to mention include:
- You will be doing lots of different activities that will help us understand your learning strengths and challenges.
- Some of these activities might be easy for you and some might be hard.
- You don't need to do anything to prepare, just try your best on the day.
- The results will help us and your teachers understand how you learn best.
- We might get some ideas about how we can better support you with your learning.
- The test will go for a few hours, so we will make sure we bring you some water and a snack. You are allowed to take a break if you need.
Does information about my child and family remain confidential?
All personal information gathered by the psychologist during the provision of the psychological service will remain confidential, except under some specific circumstances which will be outlined to you prior to commencing service. For further information, please contact us.
How much does an assessment cost?
